On Thursday, December 4, 2003 the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine opened the doors to its new fine furniture gallery. The opening of the Gallery adds a critical new public dimension to the Center, which is already recognized as one of the leading woodworking schools in the country, and furthers its commitment to promoting studio furniture as a dynamic form of contemporary expression.
The inaugural exhibition, “New Work in a New Gallery,” features exceptional work by master craftsmen from across the country, Canada and the United Kingdom. Exhibitors include: Brian Boggs (Kentucky), Michael Fortune (Canada), John Fox (Massachusetts), Andrew Garton (United Kingdom), Michael Hosaluk (Canada), Alan Lacer (Wisconsin), Julie Moringello (Maine), Duane Paluska (Maine), Brian Reid (Colorado), Kevin Rodel (Maine), Tim Rousseau (Maine), Betty Scarpino (Indiana), Peter Spadone (Maine), Jo Stone (New Hampshire), Joe Tracy (Maine), Peter Turner (Maine), and Theron Wentworth & Leslie Allen (Maine).
“The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship’s Gallery is the only venue in Maine dedicated to year-round exhibition of handcrafted furniture and fine woodworking,” said Peter Korn, the school’s Executive Director, “We believe it will provide a great service to Maine’s woodworking community and the interested public.”
The Gallery is the first new program to open as a result of the Center’s $2.4 million Capital Campaign, launched in July of 2001, and represents a major step in the school’s plans for expansion. Funds from the Campaign will also be used to expand the Center’s educational programs with a Nine-month Comprehensive, an additional Twelve-week Intensive and an innovative Studio Fellowship Program.
