June 29 – September 9, 2007
“New Work by Faculty,” an exhibition of furniture, woodturnings, and carvings by instructors at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, opened July 2, 2007 at the Rockport school’s Messler Gallery.
Peter Korn, the school’s director, describes the show as “luminous work from a cast of dubious characters who happen to be some of the finest makers in the world.” Many of the makers on display have international reputations and their work is represented in major museum collections.
Stylistically, the exhibition presents a spectrum of aesthetics, from traditionally-inspired tables and chairs to highly sculptural contemporary pieces. This diversity reflects the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship’s curriculum, which encourages each student to find his or her own creative voice.
Each year, more than 40 woodworkers from around the globe teach Workshops, Twelve-week Intensives and a Nine-month Comprehensive at the Rockport school. International exhibitors this year are Tom Kealy, Chris Pye and Toby Winteringham from England and Neil Erasmus and Nine-month Comprehensive Instructor, David Upfill-Brown from Austrailia. From the across the United States exhibiting instructors include Christian Burchard (Oregon), Ernie Conover (Ohio), Nick Cook (Georgia), John Fox, Beth Ireland and Peter Shepard (Massachusetts), Garrett Hack (Vermont), Tom Hucker (New Jersey), Michael Hurwitz (Pennsylvania), Alan Lacer (Wisconsin), Michael Mocho (New Mexico) and Jere Osgood and Ted Blachly (New Hampshire). Exhibitors from the Center’s home state of Maine are Jerry Curry, Stephen Gleasner, Jim Macdonald, Austin Matheson, Malcolm Ray, Brian Reid, Tim Rousseau, Pete Schlebecker, Peter Shepard and Peter Turner.
