Erica Moody
June 29 – July 3

This workshop offers woodworkers a hands-on introduction to metalworking through two essential toolmaking projects: a custom marking scribe and a small steel-and-brass shoulder plane. Students gain practical experience shaping, drilling, filing, brazing, riveting, and heat treating as they move from raw materials to finely tuned tools they can use in their own shops.

The week begins with the fabrication and heat treatment of a metal marking scribe, establishing core skills and safe working habits. Students then design and build a small shoulder plane by laying out and cutting brass cheeks, fitting them to a steel sole, peening and riveting the body, and installing hardwood infill. Instruction also includes shaping and heat treating the blade and tuning the finished plane for clean, precise cuts.

Through demonstrations and close individual guidance, participants learn foundational metalworking techniques that complement and expand their woodworking practice, leaving the workshop with two custom tools and the confidence to continue exploring metal in the shop.
