Mark Juliana & Jack Mauch
July 6-17

This two-week workshop bridges the gap between traditional craftsmanship and digital manufacturing. Designed for woodworkers seeking to expand their capabilities, this course covers a broad range of digital processes, including CNC machining, laser cutting, and 3D printing. Mark and Jack guide students through the full digital workflow, keeping the focus on how these processes can be integrated with traditional woodworking tools and techniques. Autodesk’s Fusion is the primary design software. Class time is split between CAD/CAM instruction and hands-on work. Rather than building a large project, students complete technical exercises and are encouraged to focus on mastering techniques that will benefit their ongoing woodworking practice, which could include:

    • CNC machining jigs, templates, and bending forms
    • CNC carving and shaping
    • CNC inlays and decorative patterns/textures
    • Joinery using CNC, Shaper Origin, and 3D printed precision guides
    • 3D printing custom cauls, clamps, and shop fixtures
    • Model-making using 3D printing and laser cutting

Throughout this course, the focus is on the practical ways that digital fabrication can complement craft. While no prior digital fabrication experience is required, students must be generally comfortable with computers.

Mark Juliana left the world of high tech in 2007 to explore more meaningful work and graduated from our Nine-month Comprehensive in 2008. He returned to Ashland, OR, where he set up a workshop and began to teach locally. In 2011, Mark returned to the Center as a Fellow and, in August of that year, joined our staff, where he now serves as Facilities Director and instructor. He is also the inventor of the EZtension bandsaw tension gauge, which he markets internationally and can be viewed at eztension.com.

Jack Mauch is a multi-disciplinary artist, designer and educator specializing in furniture, product design, 3D modeling and digital manufacturing. Jack is especially interested in how digital tools can benefit the creative practices of artists and craftspeople. He explores the intersection of traditional and digital craft in his own work and by providing digital processes education and consulting to artists and creative institutions. He is a co-founding member of Treats Studios, an artist collective in Western North Carolina where he is based. Jack’s website is jackmauch.com.
