Setting the Table: Six Designer Tableaux with Maine Artists and Artisans opened at the Messler Gallery of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship on Friday, September 28, 2012. The exhibition is presented by co-sponsor Maine Home + Design.

For Setting the Table, six of Maine’s leading interior designers have been paired with six top furniture makers and galleries to create individual dining tableaux that predominantly feature the work of Maine artists and artisans. Participating design firms are Banks Design Associates, LTD, Falmouth; Chatfield Design, Rockport; Hurlbutt Designs, Kennebunk; Maclin Design, Portland; Maine Street Design Co., Portland; and Margo Moore Interiors, Camden.

Furniture makers in the show include William Doub, Owls Head; Gregg Lipton, Cumberland; Eric Ritter, New Gloucester; Kevin Rodel, Brunswick; Tim Rousseau, Appleton; and Libby Schrum, Camden. Artwork is provided by Elizabeth Moss Galleries, Falmouth; Flat Iron Gallery, Portland; The Gallery@Frenchman’s Bay, Somesville; Gleason Fine Art, Boothbay Harbor; Holly Ready Gallery, Portland; and Maine Art Paintings & Sculpture, Kennebunkport.

“We are thrilled to be part of Setting the Table because, from our perspective, this is the perfect synergy between Maine furniture makers, designers, and artists–communities we care deeply about and are strong champions of,” says Maine Home + Design Managing Editor Rebecca Falzano. One of those designers is Brett Johnson, of Maine Street Design Co., who has set a table by Kevin Rodel to create an Asian-inspired tableaux that is punctuated by the color red, as found in the ceramics of Portland potter Jason Mowery and a painting by Portland artist Holly Ready. Another is Deborah Chatfied, who creates an airy modern tablescape with the contemporary furniture of Libby Schrum, an arrangement of succulents, and artwork by Colby College graduate Susan Jane Belton. A third designer is Megan Moore, of Margo Moore Interiors, who combines the work of renowned Portland decoupage artist Scott Potter with the Art Nouveau-inspired furniture of William Doub.
