On Friday, September 3, 2004 the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship’s Messler Gallery opened a juried exhibition of outstanding work by members of the Maine Woodworkers Association. The show is co-sponsored by the Center for Maine Contemporary Art and funded in part through a grant from the Maine Arts Commission.
With more than 100 members from across southern and central Maine, the Maine Woodworkers Association is the largest such organization in the state and represents both professional and amateur woodworkers. The exhibition was rigorously juried by a distinguished panel consisting of Miguel Gomez-Ibanez, President of The Furniture Society, William Duckworth, Associate Editor of Fine Woodworking magazine, and Bruce Brown, Curator at the Center For Maine Contemporary Art.
“The jury was impressed with the level of craftsmanship evident in the submissions, as well as the broad stylistic range of the work.” says Gomez-Ibanez. “The exhibit includes traditional furniture, contemporary designs, and evocative work more sculptural than functional. It is a tribute to the depth of talent represented by the Maine Woodworkers Association.”
