January 22 – April 6, 2016
Maine Wood is a juried, biennial exhibition designed to showcase the breadth, creativity, and excellence of Maine’s woodworking community. For 2016 the Center received 90 submissions from 45 Maine artists and artisans. “This is our fifth biennial,” says Peter Korn, Executive Director of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, “and it’s exciting to see a significant number of first-time exhibitors among the tried-and-true makers.”
Maine organizations co-sponsoring Maine Wood 2016 are the Kennebec Valley Woodworkers Association, Maine Crafts Association, Maine Woodturners, and Maine Woodworkers Association. The corporate sponsor is Bangor Savings Bank. The media sponsor is Maine Home + Design.
Approximately $2,400 in prizes donated by corporate sponsors were awarded at the opening reception. They included $300 gift certificates from DMT Diamond Whetstones for ‘Best Original Design’; from Fat Andy’s Hardwoods for ‘Outstanding Craftsmanship’; from Lie-Nielsen Toolworks for ‘Jurors’ Best in Show’; from Maine Coast Lumber for ‘Best New Maker’; from Packard Woodworks for ‘Best Turned Object’; from Rare Woods for ‘Best Use of Wood’; and from Woodcraft of Newington for ‘Best in Furniture.’ There was also a $300 cash prize from Holt & Bugbee for the ‘People’s Choice’ award.
