Maine Wood is a juried, biennial exhibition designed to showcase the breadth, creativity, and excellence of Maine’s furniture makers, turners, carvers and sculptors. “This is our fourth biennial,” says Peter Korn, Executive Director of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, “and the submissions just keep getting better and better.” For 2014 the Center received 88 submissions from 40 Maine artists and artisans.
Furniture makers in the show include Nick Barboza, Bangor; Virginia Blanchard, Thomaston; Eben Blaney, Edgecomb; Judy Bonzi, Rockport; Ray Carbone, Steuben; Wayne Hall, Orland; Gregg Lipton, Cumberland Center; Brian Reid, Rockland; Kevin Rodel, Brunswick; Michaela Crie Stone, Rockport; and David Talley, Tenants Harbor.
Woodworkers, sculptors, carvers, and turners are Clara Cohan, Cape Elizabeth; Richard Kaeyer, Owls Head; Albert Kolodji, Yarmouth; Jim Macdonald, Burnham; Jonathan Moro, Rockport; Stephen Porter, Searsmont; Malcolm Ray, Damariscotta; Cynthia V. Smith, Gorham; and Hank Tyler, Hallowell.
Many of Maine’s leading craft associations co-sponsor Maine Wood. These include the Kennebec Valley Woodworkers Association, Maine Crafts Association, Maine Wood Products Association, Maine Woodturners, Maine Woodworkers Association, and Southern Maine Woodturners. Maine Home and Design is the media sponsor.
Nearly $2,000 in prizes donated by generous corporate sponsors will be awarded at the opening reception. These include gift certificates from Maine Coast Lumber for ‘Best New Maker’; from DMT Diamond Whetstones for ‘Best Original Design’; from Rare Woods for ‘Best Use of Wood’; from Lie-Nielsen Toolworks for ‘Jurors’ Best in Show’; from Fat Andy’s Hardwoods for ‘Outstanding Craftsmanship’; and from Woodcraft of Newington for ‘Best in Furniture.’ There is also a cash prize from Holt & Bugbee for ‘People’s Choice.’
Jurors for this year’s biennial were Asa Christiana, editor of Fine Woodworking in Newtown, CT; Jonathan Fairbanks, director of the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA; and Laura Mays, director of the Fine Woodworking Program at College of the Redwoods in Fort Bragg, CA.
