Maine Wood 2012 is our third juried, biennial exhibition designed to showcase the breadth, creativity, and excellence of Maine’s furniture makers, turners, carvers and sculptors.
“The number and quality of submissions were off the scale this year,” says Peter Korn, Executive Director of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. “I only regret that we have exhibition space for just 21 pieces out of the 113 entries. The excellence of the work is a powerful confirmation of the vitality of woodworking in Maine.”
Maine Wood 2012 showcases original work by Maine studio furniture makers, turners, carvers and sculptors that exhibits excellence in craftsmanship and design, uses wood as the primary material, and was made within the past five years.
Furniture makers in the show include Nick Barboza, Bangor; Chris Becksvoort, New Gloucester; Eben Blaney, Edgecomb; David Boyle, Bath; Gregory W. Crispell, Garland; Gerald Curry, Union; Tom Dahlke, Bath; William Doub, Owls Head; Wayne Hall, Orland; Kevin Rodel, Brunswick; Jack Rodie, York; Libby Schrum, Camden; Gabriel Sutton, Biddeford; and Peter Turner, S. Portland.
Sculptors, carvers, and turners are Clara Cohan, Cape Elizabeth; Randy Colbath, Bangor; Christopher Joyce, Stonington; William F. Mack, Thomaston; Jon Moro, Rockport; Malcolm Ray, Damariscotta; and Bernice Masse Rosenthal, Damariscotta.
Many of Maine’s leading craft associations are co-sponsors of Maine Wood. These include the Guild of Maine Woodworkers, Kennebec Valley Woodworkers Association, Maine Crafts Association, Maine Woodturners, Maine Woodworkers Association, and Western Mountain Woodturners.
In addition, more than $2,000 in prizes have been generously donated by corporate sponsors. These will be awarded at the opening reception. They include gift certificates from Maine Coast Lumber for ‘Best New Maker’; from DMT Diamond Whetstones for ‘Best Original Design’; from Rare Woods for ‘Best Use of Wood’; from Lie-Nielsen Toolworks for ‘Jurors’ Best in Show’; from Certainly Wood for ‘Exceptional use of Veneer’; from Fat Andy’s Hardwoods for ‘Outstanding Craftsmanship’; and from Woodcraft of Newington for ‘Best in Furniture.’ There is also a cash prize from Holt & Bugbee for ‘People’s Choice.’ Award-winning entries will travel to the Center for Maine Craft in Gardiner where they will be on display from May 3 to June 27, 2012.
Jurors for this year’s biennial were Tom Caspar, editor of American Woodworker magazine in Eagan, MN; Miguel Gomez-Ibanez, President of the North Bennet St. School, in Boston, MA; and Yuri Kobayashi, instructor at the Rhode Island School of Design, in Providence, RI.
