Maine Wood 2010 is a biennial exhibition aimed to highlight the breadth, creativity, and excellence of wood craftsmanship in Maine, and to promote the artistic and economic development of Maine’s growing community of fine woodworkers.
This year’s show includes 16 furniture makers and sculptors: David Boyle, Gregory W. Crispell, Philippe Guillerm, Wayne Hall, Lou Landry, Matthew Lindsay, Gregg Lipton, Lin Lisberger, James Macdonald, Conger Murray, Jack Rodie, Libby Schrum, Chris Steiner, David Talley, Peter G. Thompson, and John Van Dis.
$2,000 in prizes were awarded at the opening night event. Awards include gift certificates of $500 from Lie-Nielsen Toolworks for Jurors’ Best-in-Show; $350 from Maine Coast Lumber for Best New Maker; $300 from Holt & Bugbee for the People’s Choice Award; $300 from DMT Diamond Whetstones for Outstanding Craftsmanship; $300 from Woodcraft of Newington, NH for Best in Furniture; $250 from Certainly Wood for
Best Use of Veneer; and $250 from Fat Andy’s Hardwoods for Most Creative.
Following the exhibition’s close at the Messler Gallery on February 12, 2010, the award-winning entries will travel to the Center for Maine Craft in Gardiner, Maine, where they will be on display from February 22, 2010, through April 30th, 2010.
The jurors for this year’s biennial are Anissa Kapsales, editor at “Fine Woodworking”; Gretchen Keyworth, director emeritus of the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA; and Silas Kopf, noted furniture maker in Northampton, MA. Lead sponsorship for Maine Wood 2010 is provided by Bangor Saving Bank. The exhibition is co-sponsored by the Guild of Maine Woodworkers, Kennebec Valley Woodworkers Association, Maine Crafts
Association, Maine Woodturners, Maine Woodworkers Association, and Western Mountain Woodturners. The opening event is being sponsored by IRWIN Tools and Accessories.
