“In the Palm of Your Hand: Exquisite Gifts” is an exhibition curated by wood artist Jacques Vesery, from Damariscotta, Maine. It features small-scale work in wood by 23 renowned furniture makers, woodturners, and sculptors from around the world, including vessels, gift boxes, decorative bowls, carvings, and turned sculptural objects. One of Vesery’s criteria was that no piece could exceed six inches in any dimension. He comments, “There is an added sense of beauty to an object that fits the palm of your hand.”
Peter Korn, executive director of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, remarked that the subtitle of the exhibition, “exquisite gifts,” is a double-entendre. “It reflects not only the seductive preciousness of the work, but also the extravagant talent of the makers.”
Artists in this exhibition: JM Syron and Bonnie Bishoff (MA), Christian Burchard (OR), Michael Cullen (CA), Gorst duPlessis (LA), Jean Francois and Monique Escoulen (France), Doug Finkel (VA), Douglas Fisher (Canada), Louise Hibbert (VA), Michael Hosaluk (Canada), Janel Jacobson (MN), Ray Key (United Kingdom), Mike Lee (HI), Terry Martin (Australia), Johannes Michelsen (VT), Michael Mocho (NM), Binh Pho (IL), Norm Satorius (WV), Mark Sfirri (PA), Fraser Smith (FL), Jacques Vesery (ME), and Hans Weissflog (Germany).
