The work on display was designed and built by participants in the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship’s Studio Fellowship Program. All pieces were made during or subsequent to their fellowships and represent significant creative achievement.
The Studio Fellowship Program provides advanced creative opportunities to emerging professional and mid-career woodworkers. Fellows receive free, shared studio space in the Jackson Building workshop for anywhere from a month to a year. In return, they commit themselves to full-time exploration of new work while they are here. For the emerging woodworker, this is a chance to jumpstart a career. For the established professional, it is a chance to recharge creatively and branch off in new directions.
Tim Rousseau is the “oldest” fellow participating, having served his time the winter of 1998-99. Former and current Fellows in the show are Joe Brewer (Camden, Maine), Eric Hurt (Portland, Maine), Nathan Kushner (Thunder Bay, Ontario), Chloris Lowe (New Lisbon, Wisconsin), Brian Reid (Camden, Maine), Tim Rousseau (Appleton, Maine), Libby Schrum (Camden, Maine), Maryah Smith-Overman (Asheville, North Carolina), Kristin Terpening (Rockland, Maine), Ben Watkins (Providence, Rhode Island), and Liza Wheeler (Belfast, Maine).
Interestingly enough, six of the participants have made their permanent residence in Maine as a result of their original connection with the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship.
