Maine Wood is a juried, biennial exhibition designed to showcase the breadth, creativity, and excellence of Maine’s woodworking community. For 2026, our tenth biennial, the Center received 73 submissions from 44 Maine artists and artisans. Matt Hoggle, the Center’s Executive Director, remarks, “This exhibition marks the 10th biennial of Maine Wood, one of the most meaningful ways we celebrate the depth of talent and dedication to craft found across Maine’s woodworking community. It’s a reminder of what makes Maine such a remarkable place for craftspeople: a spirit of independence and generosity, a reverence for material, and a thriving network of makers who learn from one another, collaborate freely, and keep raising the bar for what thoughtful making can be.”
Furniture makers in the show include Nick Barboza, Hampden; David Boyle, Bath; Alexander Donatelle, Portland; Aaron Fedarko, Camden; Peter Hedstrom, Brooklin; Fred Jungbluth, West Bath; Saer T. Huston, Kennebunkport; Ethan Klumpp, Union; Benjamin Martinelli, Whitefield; John May, Kittery; Jillian Mumley, Portland; Ron Sirois, Holden; Gabriel Sutton, Biddeford; Jacob Tobias, Appleton; and Christina Vincent, North Haven.
Sculptors, turners, carvers, marquetarians, and snowboard makers are Seth Bournival, Hope; Clara Cohan, Cape Elizabeth; Jeff Enck, Cumberland Center; Jeff Fister, Hampden; John P. Gardiner, Bath; Jim Macdonald, Burnham; Eric McIntyre, Wiscasset; Lynn Szymanski, York; and Olivia Van Oot, Portland.
Maine organizations co-sponsoring Maine Wood 2026 are Bangor Woodworkers Association, Guild of Maine Woodworkers, Maine Crafts Association, and Maine Woodturners.
8 prizes totaling $2400, received through generous donations from our corporate award sponsors, will be presented at the opening reception on January 30. Awards include $300 gift certificates from Rockler Woodworking and Hardware of South Portland, Maine for ‘Outstanding Craftsmanship’; from Lie-Nielsen Toolworks for ‘Jurors’ Best in Show’; from Tools for Working Wood for ‘Best New Maker’; from Packard Woodworks for ‘Best Turned Object’; from Rare Woods for ‘Best Use of Wood’; from Highland Hardwoods for ‘People’s Choice’; and from Heartwood Tools for ‘Best in Furniture.’ There is also a $300 cash prize from The Craft Initiative for the ‘Best Original Design’ award.
Jurors for this year’s biennial were Aspen Golann, Studio Furniture Maker and Founder of The Chairmaker’s Toolbox, Berwick, ME; Tom Kealy, Furniture Designer-Maker and Tutor, Somerset, UK; and David J. Marks, Woodturner, Studio Furniture Maker, and Teacher, Santa Rosa, CA.
