Nine-month Comprehensive Curvature

Written by Heide Martin on .

Guest instructor Bruce Beeken has recently joined lead instructor Aled Lewis in the Nine-month Comprehensive for the curvature portion of the course. Over the span of 5 weeks, students are exposed to steam and laminate bending, as well as a range of other curve-forming techniques.

The students then have the opportunity to apply these techniques to an original design. This design typically takes the form of a table but projects this year include everything from a coopered museum bench to a laminated and steam bent elephant! Check below for a few photos of these works in progress, and be sure to visit us on Facebook and Instagram for more images of these projects in the weeks to come.

Bending forms can be found everywhere in the shop these days. Several students have taken advantage of the ShotBot CNC router to develop complex, multipart forms. Below, student Claire Scully built this four-part lamination form with the use of the CNC.
