Asher Rodriquez-Dunn
August 19-23

This course illuminates the technical, aesthetic, and marketing components of successful lighting design. The class begins with a quick exploration of light and how it is used to create environment, including up-lighting, down-lighting, wall lighting, table lighting, work lighting, mood lighting, and color temperature. Asher then introduces technical considerations such as industry standards, bulb types, wiring, and safety. With this background in place, students work with a variety of natural and man-made materials to develop their own designs. Asher notes, “Trial and error is essential to the design process because a light that looks beautiful also has to satisfy its function in order to be desirable.” Throughout the course, he convenes individual and group discussions on factors such as light and shadow, cord considerations, production methods, cost of goods, and the marketplace.
