Clark Kellogg
October 3-7
The age-old art of letter carving is a powerful medium for expressive communication. Clark has designed this introductory course to engage carvers in other genres, furniture makers, graphic designers, burgeoning sign makers, and anyone else who wants to effectively create crisp lettering in wood with sharp carving tools.
Instruction begins with the selection and sharpening of carving tools, followed by key tool cuts that recombine to form the entire alphabet. Starting with classic Roman lettering, students practice their way through straight, curved, and combined letters. Additional topics include serifs, spacing, scale, typography, and finishing options such as painting and gilding. The final project is a small sign or monogram.
Clark Kellogg is a self-employed furniture maker in Houston, TX, who exhibits nationally.
