Curvature in the Nine Month

Written by Heide Martin on .

The Curvature portion of the Nine-month Comprehensive is always an interesting time to walk through the shops. Students are exposed to a wide array of bending techniques over the span of the 5 week segment, and apply these techniques to an original design. A walk through the bench and machine room during “curves” is always full of surprises, and this year is no exception.

Guest instructor Bruce Beeken has joined Aled Lewis to teach this segment of the course. It has been a busy few weeks for them, as for the students! Students are tacking a wide array of projects, including a set of snow shoes, a cradle, a series of snare drums, and a music stand. Be sure to visit us on Facebook and Instagram for more images of projects as they develop.

Bending projects require a great deal of ingenuity, and there is a lot of work done behind the scenes in the building of accurate jigs and fixtures. Below, student Ren Provey with a shaper jig he built for his coopered bench design.

Student Matt McLaughlin has built a series of router jigs for a series of snare drums he is building. The drums are coopered and then shaped round through routing and sanding.

Several students tackled very long bends of up to 8’, using both steam and lamination techniques.

The bench room and machine room are both full of activity these days, as students near the completion of their projects. Looking forward to seeing these builds come together!
