Current Student Work (2007)

The works on display were designed and built by participants in the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship’s current Nine-month Comprehensive, which began on September 11, 2006. The Comprehensive is structured to provide in-depth training at the highest standard of excellence and all of this year’s students are investigating studio furniture as a career path.

The remarkable variety of aesthetic sensibilities represented here exemplifies the Center’s interest in helping students to find their individual voices. This follows from the school’s basic philosophical premise, which is that we are drawn to furniture making primarily as a means of self-expression and fulfillment, whether or not we choose to adopt it as a career. While each work presented here may not be perfect in itself, it represents a way station on the path to excellence.

The Comprehensive curriculum takes students through a series of eight hands-on projects that build sequentially to expand their technical skills and design competence. Lead instructor David Upfill-Brown is joined for each project by a series of distinguished visiting instructors who specialize in relevant areas of expertise.
