Weekend Community Classes are designed for people who cannot schedule the full-time attendance required for our Workshops and other programs. Community Classes provide the same outstanding instructors and facilities in a more accessible time format. Classes are held Saturday and Sunday 9-5.

Machine Maintenance

February 2-3

This class covers set up, maintenance, and repair of the woodworker’s most essential machines; the jointer, thickness planer, bandsaw, and table saw. Instruction includes replacing and setting knives and blades, calibration, and general tune-up techniques.

Open to all.

Class size limited to six.

 

Spoon Carving

February 2-3

Learn the traditional craft of spoon carving using time-honored methods. Students carve wooden spatulas and spoons with a sloyd knife and a spoon gouge.

Open to all.

Class size limited to eight.

Materials included, two tools required.

 

Turning Tutorial

Stephen Gleasner & Jacques Vesery

February 23-24

This course enables turners to expand their technical and creative skills with extensive one-on-one supervision. Participants may either embark upon new projects or bring work in progress. Spindle, faceplate, and hollow turning projects are welcome, as are questions about sharpening, tool handling, and much else.

Open to all except absolute beginners.

Materials may be brought or bought.

 

Turning Tool Handles

March 9-10

Stephen teaches the step-by-step process for making custom tool handles, including fitting a ferrule to a tenon and turning handles to proper proportions. Students complete their own awls to take home.

Turning Plywood Vessels

March 16-17

Students work with Stephen to learn his signature technique: turning in laminated plywood. Each participant creates a gorgeous plywood coffee mug with a stainless steel liner, with the option of applying color.

Open to all.

Eligibility:

Community Woodturning Classes are open to anyone who is 16 years of age or older.

Registration and Payment Information:

Please call our office at 207-594-5611 to check availability and to register for the class.

  • Community Class tuition ($290) is payable in full at the time of registration.
  • If you withdraw from a community class more than seven days in advance, we will refund your tuition less a $35 cancellation fee. 
  • No refund will be given for withdrawal within seven days of a Community Class.
  • We accept personal checks, Visa or MasterCard.
  • In the event that the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship must cancel a class, we will promptly refund the full tuition amount.
